Topgolf targets Albuquerque for first New Mexico location

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Land that was once home to an Albuquerque water park is seeing new life after being vacant for over a decade.

Dying palm trees are all that’s left of The Beach.

“It was probably the best thing to do as a kid. It was a pretty big attraction here in Albuquerque. I had so much fun there,” Megan Gallegos said.

The once-popular water park was located just off I-25 and Montano, but for more than a decade, the land has been vacant.

“It’s nice to have something there because, absolutely, you drive by and you’re like, ‘Yeah, that used to be The Beach,’ and that’s unused property there… It’s not a bad spot,” Chris Losack said.

Sports entertainment company TopGolf announced Wednesday it’s interested in building in the area.

“Albuquerque has always been kind of a melting pot of markets for us and we wanted to look into Albuquerque months ago,” said TopGolf spokesperson Morgan Wallace.

TopGolf plans to build a three-level venue with 72 hitting bays where guests can enjoy golf games using micro-chipped balls to measure distance and accuracy.

Residents say they’re excited about a unique style of entertainment.

“I believe that it will bring a lot of people together and it’s something brand new Albuquerque doesn’t have,” Megan Gallegos said.

You don’t have to be a professional golfer to enjoy it either.

“TopGolf is a place for everyone whether you’re a golfer or not,” Wallace said.

Along with offering a good time, TopGolf would create 325 full-time and part-time jobs.

After all of the permits have been approved by the city, TopGolf says once it breaks ground the new facility will take eight to ten months to build.

Pending city approval, the entertainment chain would open in spring 2019.
