Tim's Place set to close, couple opens up about decision to leave

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Time is running out to get one last hug from Tim Harris of Tim's Place.

Tim's Place is closing Sunday. KRQE News 13 sat down with Tim and his girlfriend Tiffani Johnson to talk about the tough decision to close.

Tiffani and Tim met at the National Down Syndrome Congress Convention. The two started dating this summer but Tiffani lives in Iowa and it hasn't been easy being apart so they've decided it's time to be together in Denver.

Tim says they actually picked Denver because Tiffani was already moving there to be closer to family. But, it meant leaving behind his first love.

"I always wanted a restaurant since I was a kid," Tim said.

The restaurant in northeast Albuquerque has been Tim's home for the past five years. Tim's Place" will close Sunday at two.

It's the only known restaurant owned and operated by a person with down syndrome and where his famous hugs are on the menu. To date, he's given more than 75,000.

It's a place about happiness, so Tim says you're not allowed to get sad telling him bye. But even Tiffani tears up when talking about the restaurant closing.

"To have a guy that picks his girlfriend over his restaurant," Tiffani said.

That's something that's not lost on her. She says she's waited a long time to find someone like Tim.

Both say it's time for the next chapter.

"I'm going to miss it here but I'm doing for it love," Tim says.

Tim says he is most thankful for his customers and family. He is planning to open a "Tim's Place" in Denver but make it a little different.
