SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – Deputies thought they would be doing a nice deed, returning a lost wallet to a woman.

Then, they realized they had another reason to talk to her, and things escalated quickly.

“No, please. I’ll pay you,” a woman is heard screaming on lapel video from the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office.

The woman making a run for it and begging for mercy had everyone wondering the same thing.

“What’s going on?” her friend asked.

This all started with a missing wallet. A Good Samaritan found it on a Santa Fe street and called the Sheriff’s Office.

Then on Wednesday, deputies went looking for the woman who owns it, leaving messages and knocking on doors.

Turns out, deputies needed to pay her a visit anyway. Morgan Sanders had a warrant for skipping out on court for a traffic ticket.

“You didn’t know your wallet was missing?” a deputy asked her.

“No, I’ve been at school all day,” Sanders responded.

Before the deputy mentions the warrant, Sanders seems to knows what’s coming.

“You also have a…” the deputy started to say.

“I understand,” Sanders immediately answered. “Can you not, can you…”

The deputy said, “No.”

That prompted Sanders to scream and try to run from deputies.

Her screams scared a friend nearby who went after, what he thought was Sanders’ attacker, with a hatchet. He stopped when a deputy identified himself.

“There is a hatchet right here, and I want you to know it’s there,” the friend warned the deputy. “I apologize for that.”

Sanders also apologized, “I did not mean to run from you guys. I’m really sorry.”

“Simple warrant, could’ve been taken care of,” the deputy told her.

Instead, Sanders was also arrested for resisting arrest and marijuana paraphernalia.

Sanders pleaded not guilty.

Her friend with the hatchet was not charged for anything because it was a misunderstanding and the deputy said he was not hurt.
