Taos deputy accused of Medicaid fraud released without bond

TAOS, N.M. (KRQE) – A Taos deputy accused of bilking Medicaid has been released without bond.

Sergeant Ricky Romero is accused of taking Medicaid payments for caring for an elderly neighbor, while at the same time billing the sheriff’s office for work.

He is facing 21 felony counts.

Judge Jeff McElroy released Romero on his own recognizance, then recused himself from the case because of conflicts.
