Suspect who kidnaps 2, pins officer to car, shot and killed

ALBUQUERQUE, NM (KRQE) – It was a chaotic scene. Bernalillo County Sheriff’s deputies say a thief on the run broke into a home and kidnapped two people. It all ended with deputies shooting and killing him.

KRQE News 13 spoke with a neighbor who says two people visiting family were staying at the South Valley home when around 6 a.m. the thief took both them and their car.

Neighbors say it was a scary situation. One woman was on her way to work says she saw a car drive by and two people inside waving and screaming for help. That’s when she called her neighbor.

“He was telling what had happened, that they got in the house, he tried to offer his truck to them and they didn’t they took the car and the people with them,” witness Win Simon said.

Deputies say it all started around 5 a.m. at the Isleta Golf Course where the suspect was trying to steal golf carts. They then got a call about a burglary in the nearby neighborhood.

They went to check it out, heard glass break and they ran to the home. They tried stopping the suspect who had the two kidnapped people in the car, but the suspect wasn’t giving up and hit a deputy, pinning him between the car and a light pole.

Deputies say at least one officer fired shots at the suspect, killing him. He died on scene, and the deputy was taken to the hospital.

“We went to see him at the hospital, he’s recovering there, at the hospital. He’s very shaken up, very traumatized by this event, you can just imagine yourself if you were struck by a car, it’s a very traumatic situation,” Bernalillo County Chief Deputy Ray Chavez said.

Bernalillo County says the deputy had multiple injuries including broken bones and head trauma. The people who were kidnapped were not injured.

BCSO has not released the suspect’s name.
