Surveillance video captures burglary suspects in elderly woman’s home

A South Valley man said his house keeps getting broken into. What’s worse, the thieves are breaking in when his elderly grandmother is home and stealing from her right under her nose.

“It started off little, right, I would come home and notice that my door was open or something like that knowing full well it wasn’t like that,” said Michael Mirabal.

Mirabal takes care of his 90-year-old grandma. For the past month, he said knick-knacks around their South Valley home have suddenly gone missing.

“My immediate reaction was to talk to my grandma because she’s here all day and the response was, ‘Well somebody was here, but I’m not 100 percent sure who,'” said Mirabal.

So he set up cameras to find out, and Wednesday morning he got an alert someone was at the door.

“And I immediately turned on the doorbell camera and I don’t know who these people are,” said Mirabal.

A man and woman invited themselves in.

“She doesn’t even open the door for them, they just walk in,” said Mirabal.

Mirabal said his grandma, who suffers from dementia, doesn’t understand these two just broke in. She even makes small talk with the intruders.

“Somebody has been breaking into the house,” said the grandma in surveillance video.

She points out the new surveillance cameras to help catch the people who have been burglarizing her home. Little does she know, they’re sitting in her living room.

Mirabal quickly calls his grandma and fills her in as to what’s actually happening.

“Are you taking anything in here,” asked the grandma in the surveillance video.

“No,” replied the man.

The pair didn’t hang around long after Mirabal called 911.

“You’re taking advantage of someone really nice and at some level, I hope you think on that and change yourself for the better for that,” said Mirabal.

Mirabal said the pair didn’t take anything during Wednesday morning’s break-in because his grandma pointed out the cameras.

The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office confirms deputies were called out to that home Wednesday morning and a report has been filed. No arrests have been made.
