Surveillance video captures after-hours Costco jewelry heist

News

Newly released surveillance video shows how a suspect got away with hiding out inside an Albuquerque retailer to pull off a high-dollar jewelry heist.

The video is tied to a March burglary at the Costco store near I-25 and Montaño.

Albuquerque Police say 57-year old Joseph Romero hid out inside the Costco for hours after the business closed for the night. Romero is accused of stealing thousands of dollars worth of jewelry from inside the business.

Surveillance video obtained by KRQE News 13 shows a man police have identified as Romero and a second unidentified man walking inside the Costco around 8 p.m. on a Friday night in March, approximately 30 minutes before the store closed.

Video shows the two men walking through various parts of the store before cameras lose sight of them.

Around 9:20 p.m., video shows the unidentified man being escorted out of the store by an employee. Police say Romero was still hiding out inside.

Just after midnight, surveillance video shows a masked man emerge in camera view near the appliances. Police believe that man to be Romero.

Video shows the man sneaking over to a jewelry case, then using a rug and his fist to smash hole in the top of the case.

In about ten minutes, video shows the masked man clear out more than half of the glass case, taking handful  after handful of jewelry.

Albuquerque Police haven’t said the exact jewelry that was taken or if Costco got any of it back.

After another 15 minutes, the suspect is seen slipping out the back door with a bag full of items.

Police arrested Romero in late April following the release of surveillance video and a tip that tied him to the crime. Romero was arrested outside of an Albuquerque Smith’s. Police say he was allegedly stealing groceries from that store.

Romero is out of jail but now has a warrant for his arrest. According to court records, the warrant was issued Monday, June 18 after Romero allegedly missed a court date for the Costco burglary case.
