State Police briefed on how to respond to WIPP truck emergency

News

State Police officers are making sure they know what they’re dealing with if they ever have to respond to an emergency involving a WIPP truck.

Members of the New Mexico State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Bureau and Chief Pete Kassettas visited the WIPP site this week to gain additional knowledge about the facility since its reopening.

The bureau inspects all commercial motor vehicles loaded with radioactive waste materials bound for the plant in Carlsbad.

The plant is slowly reopening after a radioactive materials leak and truck fire in 2014. WIPP shipments resumed in September.
