ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The state is working to prevent surprise medical bills for New Mexico residents.
A recent study found about 20 percent of patients have received a surprise medical bill they expected their insurance to pay. The rates were higher for those who had surgery or were forced to visit the emergency room.
The office of the Superintendent of Insurance says it is working with lawmakers to create a provision that protects patients from surprise medical bills.
They hope to get public comment, then present it to the legislature in 2019.
