State lawmakers are looking to boost early childhood education.

At a hearing Thursday, lawmakers talked about expanding pre-k classes across the state.

While lawmakers generally agree that New Mexico kids, especially those living in poverty, need access to early education, the question is where will the money come from.

The debate heated up after a report showed the number of children living in poverty grew in 2016.

The committee will team up with the National Conference of State Legislatures and The Kellogg Foundation to explore funding options.
