State film office trains medics for TV, movie industry

Without them, your favorite movies and TV shows would not be possible. Set medics are a crucial part of the film industry, keeping the crew safe.

In order to get an action shot or a set to be built, you need someone to make sure it all happens without injury.

“Every location should have a medic. Every set should have a medic,” said Michelle Fox.

Fox is an EMT and has been working as a set medic in the film industry for the past eight years.

“We are there to prevent things from happening and we’re there to react when there is an injury or accident on set,” said Fox.

On Saturday, Fox led a class in Albuquerque on how to be a medic in the film industry for people who are already certified first responders. She says safety is something a lot of people don’t even think about when they want to work in film.

“Somebody loses a finger, or somebody runs into something and gets hurt. Somebody has a heart attack. You know, just basic human things that happen,” she says.

The class attracted some people who have been in the medical field for close to 20 years, like Loren Santa Maria.

“Just the opportunity to get into something different. Something that’s exciting and just the state of New Mexico True,” said Santa Maria.

Newly certified EMTs came out with an interest too, with this and bigger goals in mind.

“I’ve always had a lifetime goal of getting into the Albuquerque Fire Department, so this is a good resume builder,” says Joshua Spinello.

The minimum requirement to be a set medic is a basic EMT license. A set medic is required at every location, and with the industry growing in Albuquerque, the need is definitely there.

“We always hope that nothing is going to happen and in general, the crews are very very safe, but there’s always that accident that happens,” said Fox.

Medics not only help keep the film crew safe, but they also are around when sets are being built with heavy machinery. Fox says a majority of the injuries happen during construction.

Set medics are part of a union and usually work a full-time first responder job in addition to this side job.
