A Special Olympics event promoted inclusivity and kindness at a local elementary school. Albuquerque Public School’s John Baker Elementary hosted its Second Unified Team event Saturday morning.
It’s where students with disabilities are paired up with their peers to play sports. Roughly 70 students competed in a variety of adapted games from relays and long jumps to the 50-yard dash.
Organizers say it’s not about winning, but learning how to be friends and cheer each other on.
“As a parent, events like this are so inspiring. All of these kids, regardless of the ability, are out here participating and giving it their all,” said parent Oona Gonzales.
Organizers hope to get more local schools involved in the coming years.
