TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES, N.M. (KRQE) – While Spaceport America has yet to launch space tourists, the facility is attracting other business.
The latest success is recruitment of a company called X2nSat.
The firm has signed an agreement to work out a lease for some land at the spaceport for a satellite communications terminal.
The company says it will be the world’s most modern satellite gateway. It hopes the new facility will be operational in 2016.
X2nsat says the terminal would tie into the company’s existing system headquartered in California, and the spaceport’s high speed fiber network, to help provide satellite data and internet services to banks, merchants, healthcare firms and others around the world.
The company also says the remote spaceport location offers many of the attributes needed for a reliable satellite communications terminal. Those include low electromagnetic interference levels, good dry weather, strong security, a good wide view of the sky and a southern latitude.
The facility will not only provide lease fees, still to be negotiated, but jobs for as many as 20 people who would work there.
Spaceport managers say they hope to attract five more teleports in the next 5 years.
The quarter-billion dollar spaceport has been waiting years for anchor tenant Virgin Galactic to bring in the much-delayed tourism rocket, Spaceship Two.
