ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – A man in a Southeast Albuquerque neighborhood said there has been a recent mini crime wave near his home.
How does he know? It’s all on camera.
“We don’t want confrontation with anybody, we just don’t want them messing with our stuff,” said Alan Swain.
Swain said his neighborhood has come a long way over the years.
“It’s a cool neighborhood man,” said Swain. “Fringecrest is rocking.”
Swain owns a duplex in the community where he rents out to tenants. He said he added a camera around two years ago as more of an experiment. He said he wanted crime to decrease in an alley behind his home.
“Once I did that I realized there’s a lot of crime around here, but it’s petty crime,” said Swain.
He said once he caught his first offense on camera, the rest was history.
“I just kind of grew the system by buying a camera here, buying a camera there,” said Swain.
Now he said he has multiple cameras at different angles.
“I’ve probably stopped like 15 or 20 car burglaries,” said Swain.
Just recently, Swain said he recorded an attempted car theft, men trying to steal different items, people doing drugs, and someone abandoning a stolen car in the alley. Swain said what he captures usually finds its way to police.
“We’re trying to band together, exchange information, and you know see what we can do to help the police solve this stuff,” said Swain.
Neighbor Laura Green said she’s thankful for Swain’s extra eyes.
“Coming and going through the alley, I think it makes things a bit safer and if anything happens to my truck or to myself, there’s a record of it,” said Green.
Swain said with his cameras rolling day in and out, he’s hoping it’ll help make his neighborhood a place people want to call home.
“If we all get together and all watch out for each other, there’s way more of us then there is of them,” said Swain.
As well as giving some of his video to police, Swain said he also posts his videos on the website Nextdoor, which is a social networking site for communities. He said he wants his neighbors to be able to see exactly what’s happening around them.
