Smith’s is hoping to thwart thieves by installing security devices on its shopping carts.

Shoppes at certain New Mexico Smith’s may see warnings telling them if they try to take the shopping cart past the edge o the parking lot, the cart will stop.

It’s a technology already used by many retailers.

Smith’s says it also allows employees to lock the carts remotely, in case someone is trying to roll one out full of stolen goods.

The feature has been installed at eight Albuquerque Smith’s stores, with plans to expand to more.
