SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) — Several people are injured after a terrifying incident at one Santa Fe eatery.
Police say a car plowed into the Jambo Cafe. Police say the driver was an elderly woman who pressed the wrong pedal.
The owner of Jambo says although he wasn’t there when someone crashed into his restaurant, the aftermath alone has shaken him up.
“I’m happy my employees are OK, but we’re in shock,” he said.
Santa Fe Police say a woman in her 80’s was backing out of a parking spot when she hit two other cars. Officers say, when she put the car into drive and started moving forward, she stepped on the gas instead of the brakes, plunging the car 25 feet into the restaurant.
Witnesses at nearby businesses say they felt helpless to stop it.
“Me and the girl I was helping bother were screaming at her and it seemed like she was zoned out,” witness Margaret Gutierrez said.
Officers estimate there were about 30 people in the cafe at the time. They say a few had broken legs and one complained of back pain. Others suffered minor injuries.
Police say the investigation is ongoing.
An employee at a nearby clothing store says this is the second time the shopping center has seen this situation. She says the same thing happened in 2013.
