Bernalillo Public Schools says it’s made changes after a former employee stole tens of thousands of dollars from students.

Antoinette Garcia, 45, pleaded guilty to fraud charges in federal court Wednesday.

Garcia was a bookkeeper for Bernalillo Public Schools through February 2016, when officials noticed Caroll Elementary and Le Escuelita’s finances were off.

Thursday, the superintendent said after the incident with Garcia, the district has monthly trainings with all bookkeepers.

The finance department also goes to schools to perform audits on school activity acounts, and the old paper system has been replaced with a new, online accounting system.
