SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – KRQE News 13 is working to learn more about the 3-month-old found dead at a Santa Fe motel Saturday. Police say the baby boy was being watched at the Thunderbird Inn by 25-year-old Rachel Smith.
Smith says she woke and found that the baby was not breathing she ran to a neighboring room for help.
The baby boy was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. Investigators say it appears the boy may have suffocated.
After further questioning, they say Smith admitted to passing out after shooting up with heroin. They say at first Smith claimed she was the boy’s mother and the mom of a 2-year-old girl who was also there. They soon learned Smith was just watching them while the mother, a 17-year-old, went out for the night. The incident has people in Santa Fe very concerned and wanting to know the whole story.
When asked why Smith claimed to be the child’s mother, police say she thought it wouldn’t seem intentional that way and she wouldn’t be in so much trouble.
Smith is charged with child endangerment, obstruction of an investigation and drug possession.
