Santa Fe police to hold sobriety checkpoint in honor of DWI victims

SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – Santa Fe police are honoring the memory of two sisters killed by a drunk driver by trying to stop more DWI deaths.

Seven years ago, Del Lyn and Deshauna Peshlakai were riding with their parents on the way back from a high school basketball tournament when a drunk driver slammed into the back of their car.

The driver responsible, James Ruiz, had five previous DWI arrests at the time of the crash.

Thursday night, Santa Fe police will hold a sobriety checkpoint at the scene in honor of the teens. Santa Fe police say occasions like this help drive the point home.
