Santa Fe Community College selects new president

Santa Fe Community College is getting a new president and the governing board’s choice is a New Mexico native.

The board unanimously decided overnight to hire Clovis Community College President Becky Rowley. The Clovis native has been president of that community college since 2011.

She says she believes she has a very good understanding of higher education in New Mexico and a good relationship with the legislators.

Remote legislative session impacts Santa Fe restaurants, hotels

SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – The hospitality industry has taken a hit because of the pandemic and now there's a remote legislative session, some businesses in Santa Fe might face another blow. Because of the pandemic, restaurants are seeing fewer customers and hotels aren't booking as many reservations as normal.

Now that the Roundhouse is closed off to the public, they're worried they'll lose business they depend on this time of year. "That's a third of our entire inventory for the entire 60-day session and they all canceled, they had to, it's all virtual," said the owner of the Pueblo Bonito B&B, Amy Behm.

New Mexicans react to arrest of Otero Co. Commissioner Couy Griffin

ALAMOGORDO, N.M. (KRQE) – The fallout continues after the arrest of Otero County Commissioner Couy Griffin, for his role in the attack on the U.S. Capitol earlier this month. Some residents in Otero County are calling for his removal from office.

Otero County Commissioner and leader of the group Cowboys for Trump was arrested Sunday by the FBI in Washington, D.C. for his role in the attack on the Capitol building on Jan. 6. Griffin described to fellow commissioners, in a Jan. 14 meeting, how the group he was with was not going to be stopped from getting into the Capitol building.

Lawsuit challenges New Mexico special election rules for independent candidates

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A new lawsuit tied to the state’s rules for independent candidates has emerged as the expected departure of Congresswoman Deb Haaland is likely to spark a special election. An independent voter is suing the state hoping to lower the bar for candidates without major party affiliation who want their name on the ballot.

The lawsuit filed in Bernalillo County District Court claims state law unconstitutionally discriminates against independent candidates. The lawsuit claims candidates face “a significantly more daunting path to ballot access,” or the process of getting their names on the ballot.
