Sandoval County votes against pay raises for elected officials

News

Sandoval County Commissioners will not give incoming elected officials a 10 percent raise.

Commissioners voted against the proposal during a meeting Thursday night.

This salary increase would have included two county commissioners, the assessor, probate judge and the sheriff.

The proposal sparked controversy after some commissioners felt Sandoval County was losing deputies to higher paying departments and a pay raise for deputies was more important.

“We’ve been making strides to try to take care of our sheriff’s department and we are at a comparative disadvantage when it comes to Bernalillo County, and I can’t tell you if that will ever change,” said Commissioner Don G. Chapman.

The last pay raise for elected officials in Sandoval County was in 2014.
