Roswell man gives new bike to less fortunate man

ROSWELL, N.M. (KRQE) – A New Mexico man’s good deed is getting a lot of attention.

After noticing a less fortunate man’s bicycle was falling apart, he went on a mission to track him down and bring him a new bike.

The man’s name is Reggie and people around town know him well, saying you can always find him with a smile on his face.

“I like it,” Reggie said as he laughed.

It’s all because of the kindness of one stranger.

Alex Barrera was making a stop for water at a local gas station while delivering food for Meals on Wheels when he saw Reggie and noticed what bad shape his old bike was in.

“Oh yeah it keep getting a lot of flats,” said Reggie.

Barrera snapped a picture of Reggie and put it on social media.

“I posted a picture of him asking if anybody knew who he was so that I could get him a new bike,” said Barrera, “There were several people who know who he was, grew up with him, knew his family and there was nothing but positive things that everybody said about him.”

People know Reggie for wandering around town, opening doors for people, and for always having a big smile on his face.

So Barrera searched for him for two weeks.

“Eventually I had to do the same Meals on Wheels route and it just happened that he was there that day when I stopped to get water again and so I called my boss and had her bring the bike over,” he said.

The timing couldn’t have been better, Reggie’s bike was on its last legs.

“I was just going to load his old bike in the back of the pickup truck and when I picked it up it completely fell apart,” said Barrera.

Barerra also went back a few days later and brought Reggie a new lock for his bike to make sure it doesn’t get stolen.

Reggie has already been seen around town riding his new bike with an ever bigger smile on his face.
