Roswell 2-year-old left unattended in car

News

ROSWELL, N.M. (KRQE) – A 2-year-old is in state custody after being found alone in an unlocked car. Roswell police say the mother left the child unattended for almost an hour outside the Wal-Mart there.

Two passersby noticed the child and reported it. The DA will take a look at the case but at this point the mother is not facing charges but she could face child abandonment or abuse.

The woman is facing shoplifting and drug possession charges in a separate case. Right now there is no law in the state directly relating to leaving kids unattended in cars. But there is a bill in the legislature right now that would change that.

Under the proposal it would be a crime to leave a child younger than 10 years old unattended in a car for longer than five minutes. At least 19 other state states have similar laws.
