U.S. Highway 550 just south of Silverton was shut down for several hours Thursday after a semi-trailer carrying metal alloy crashed.
The incident occurred on Highway 550 between Cascade and Silverton around 8 p.m. Wednesday night.
Around the same time, another semi-trailer was involved in a two-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 491 just north of the New Mexico state line.
The Durango Herald reports that the vehicle involved in the crash was completely engulfed in flames.
One person has been confirmed dead.
UPDATE: Highway 550 remains closed between mp 49 (near Cascade) and Silverton due to HazMat Tanker Crash. Crews are working to offload the flammable and dangerous cargo before it can be towed.
