Rio Rancho wants feedback on city center’s development plans

The City of Rio Rancho is asking everyone who lives there to give them ideas on how to make it a more attractive place and to make it feel more urban.

The city center was supposed to be a booming place by now.

“There’s nothing around it,” said locals Walt and Darlene Pearson. “So yeah, you have to have something to keep the people there.”

More than a decade ago when the city announced its plans for a new downtown, they released images showing an urban center with boulevards, and apartment buildings with retail and restaurants down below. Then came the recession and everything stopped.

It also shows more urban development and calls for more interesting architecture: walls to hide unsightly views and landscaping along major streets.

People KRQE News 13 talked to have their own ideas.

“Definitely theaters and places, you know, where people can gather,” suggested local David James. “They have that arena there but maybe bring in like a soccer club? I know they have one out in Albuquerque but bringing one out here to Rio Rancho would be great.”

The comprehensive plan from the city has been developed and revised every few years since 2010, but it’s been slow to get the ball rolling on development plans.

There are a lot more elements to this plan, like creating more parks and improving streets and water lines.

The city is hosting six public meetings for more input on what the future of Rio Rancho should look like.
