Elementary school students in the metro are out to prove healthy food can taste good.
Wednesday, 10 teams from Rio Rancho competed in the “Future Chefs Challenge.” This year’s theme was “Fiesta Fit,” with judges basing their ratings on factors like originality, kid-friendliness, healthy ingredients, and of course, flavor.
“Some years we’ve done smoothies, some year’s we’ve done salads, and this year we just have a Mexican theme where it’s a healthy after-school snack,” Mark Willis, food service director, said.
The challenge is sponsored by Sodexo, the district’s contracted food service provider. Winners get to keep their chef hats and coats and take home a special gift bag.
