The Rio Rancho School Board has voted to arm its security guards.
The Board wants to put 12 armed guards across the district on a rotating basis.
The officers themselves — most of them retired law enforcement — are already on the payroll. The new measure just allows them to carry guns while on duty.
The district does also have three school resource officers who have always carried guns. The goal is to get these guards trained and armed in the next few months.
The district says when it surveyed parents and community members, they were overwhelmingly in support of the move.
