RIO RANCHO, N.M. (KRQE) – A new Rio Rancho law allowing the city to take cars from drunk drivers could be stopped in its tracks.
The Rio Rancho Observer reports that a city resident is collecting signatures to force a special election on the issue.
Under the law approved last month, the city could forfeit the car if a driver with two prior DWI convictions is caught drunk behind the wheel.
It doesn’t take effect until July.
If the petition effort gets a little more than 5,700 signatures, the law would be put on hold.
