Rio Rancho asks for more data before approving new cell tower

The Rio Rancho City Council wants more information before deciding whether to allow construction of a new cell tower.

The proposed Verizon Wireless tower near Unser and Westside has drawn opposition from neighbors. At Wednesday’s council meeting, they raised concerns about safety and aesthetics, arguing the tower would hurt home values in their growing neighborhood.

However, Verizon argues the proposal meets the appropriate requirements, and plenty of cell towers in other neighborhoods have not had a negative impact. The commission said it wanted more data.

“At this point, the governing body needs to see the other studies, and we need to see the due diligence on this and have a broader discussion before we sit this down right next to somebody’s residential property,” Mayor Gregg Hull said.

Verizon’s request now heads back to planning and zoning.
