Rio Grande trail project one step closer to completion

A project developing a 500-mile trail along the Rio Grande through New Mexico is moving forward.

State officials announced the commission in charge of the project has signed off on a master plan identifying the route, as well as the state and local agencies making it happen.

According to the plan, the route will range from back-country trails to roadside pedestrian paths and bike lanes.

The project has been in the works for the last couple of years, with backers saying it has the potential to become one of the country’s famous long-distance routes like the Appalachian and Continental Divide trails.
