Researchers from UNM working with NASA to test Mars rover

News

Researchers from the University of New Mexico and other universities are working with NASA to explore whether there’s life on Mars.

The project involves studying caves in California’s Lava Beds National Monument, which scientists say are similar to land formations on the red planet.

They say that makes it the ideal place on Earth to test out how the rover will work when it gets to Mars.

“So technically they will have instruments attached to it, so they will basically be spreading their arms and clinging to the walls of the cave as they are walking through and map many different parameters,” Kansas State Professor Saugata Datta said.

Researchers from Northwestern University, Kansas State and the Desert Research Institute are also participating in the project.
