Report: Albuquerque shoppers likely to spend $526 this holiday season

The holiday shopping season is almost upon us, and a new report shows exactly how much shoppers in the metro are likely to spend on presents this year.

It’s clear the holidays are here. You can see it in stores across the metro. Along with the decorations and door busters, are holiday shoppers.

“All of these people are already out…like, I got my Christmas shopping done and I’m like, awesome,” said Jordan Gately, a shopper at La Von Blu.

These shoppers say getting stocking stuffers at La Von Blu in Nob Hill won’t break your bank, but they admit this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Everyone’s budget is different, but financial website Wallet Hub says the average shopper in Albuquerque will spend $526 on gifts this year — about $480 less than the average American.

That’s also about $10 less than what metro shoppers spend last year, dropping Albuquerque from 399th to 424th among other U.S. cities.

That $500 still seems a little steep to some shoppers.

“That’s ridiculous,” said a local shopper. “Because that’s not what Christmas is about…it’s about seeing your family.”

And while some think holiday shopping is a burden, others considers it a blessing and a treasured part of their holiday tradition.

Santa Fe and Rio Rancho ranked much higher than Albuquerque when it comes to Christmas spending. Shoppers in those cities spend about $610 each.
