SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – The numbers are in and according to Santa Fe police, 56,000 people attended this year’s burning of Zozobra.

According to the Santa Fe New Mexican, the record number is prompting the department’s chief to suggest the event should find a new home.

The burning has been held at Fort Marcy Park since the early 1930’s. Organizers of the event say they’re committed to keeping the event where it is, but do admit some changes should be made.

Right now, city council says they’ve set aside $600,000 for bridge improvements at the park.

That could help allowing the crowds to move in and out of the watching area. The construction could start early next year.
