Portales man convicted again for overturned murder conviction

News

PORTALES, N.M. (KRQE) – A Portales man whose conviction in a 12-year-old murder was overturned has been convicted a second time.

44-year-old Arnoldo Navarette killed Reynaldo Ornelas Sr. in 1993. Navarette was caught 16 years later in Odessa, Texas. Navarette was convicted but the state supreme court overturned the conviction because the pathologist who testified wasn’t directly involved in the case.

A new jury heard the same evidence and also reached a guilty verdict. A judge has sentenced Navarette to life in prison.
