PORTALES, N.M.(KRQE)- A New Mexico arson investigation has now turned into a murder investigation.

Police now say a couple found dead in a fire had been shot.

The fire tore through the house early Wednesday morning and when firefighters arrived the home was already engulfed in flames.

After it was out, they found the bodies of 31-year-old Christina Griffin and 39-year-old John Bustamante.

Portales police are now treating this as a homicide investigation after results of the preliminary autopsy.

“We learned that both victims had been found to have gunshot wounds prior to the ignition of the fire,” said Detective Charlie Smart, spokesman for the  Portales Police Department.

Police aren’t releasing any more information at this time.

Neighbors say they had no idea what may have happened in that home or why the couple may have been killed.

Crime Stoppers is offering up to a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
