There’s a new push to overturn a controversial gun law. The new law requires background checks for guns sold privately and at gun shows. Opponents sent a petition to the Secretary of State to overturn it and leave it up to the voters.
In a response, Maggie Toulouse Oliver claimed people cannot petition laws that provide for “the preservation of the public peace, health and safety.”
Tuesday, Rep. James Townsend resubmitted the petition. He claims it’s the secretary’s responsibility to ensure the petitioning process is correctly followed, and that any ruling beyond that exceeds the bounds of the office.
Toulouse Oliver has 10 days to respond.
