Some New Mexico lawmakers want to join a group of states trying to change how the county selects a president.

According to the Santa Fe New Mexican, a state Senate committee approved a bill that would allow New Mexico to join a compact of several states. Those states would pledge their Electoral College votes to the candidate who wins the popular vote.

Critics say the bill could force New Mexicans to back a candidate who did not win the state’s vote. The bill has to pass another Senate committee before moving forward.
