A hot button issue continues as the Senate reworks a bill aimed at reviving three University of New Mexico sports teams.
House Bill 2 had originally allocated $2 million in funding specifically to help the university bring back men’s soccer, skiing and beach volleyball. Last year, UNM cut those teams to be in compliance with Title 9.
Lawmakers originally saw the bill as a way to help athletes, but Monday night the Senate Finance Committee is changing its language, saying they will allocate the funds but won’t make them specific to the cut sports programs.
At this point, it’s unclear how the school would spend the funding if the bill passes.
