Sen. Tom Udall is pressing fellow lawmakers to support a bill protecting Chaco Canyon.
All five members of New Mexico’s congressional delegation are sponsoring legislation to restrict oil and gas drilling in the area. Tuesday, Sen. Udall discussed the bill before a Senate subcommittee.
He says Chaco Canyon holds special significance for Native American communities. “Chaco is known around the world as the heart of a culture that inhabited the Four Corners area for hundreds of years,” Udall said.
Sen. Udall also testified about the Buffalo Tract Protection Act, which would withdraw four sites from gravel mining.
