Rep. Deb Haaland has introduced a bill ensuring military families have safe living conditions.
The move follows a report from Reuters that proved a lack of proper maintenance exposed families at Kirtland Air Force Base to lead paint, bursting pipes, mold and more.
Earlier this month, Haaland addressed the issue of retaliation on families who raise concerns.
“This is extremely troubling as retaliation is a big breach of trust between the Department of Defense and families that leads families to come to the press and come to Congress in the first place,” Rep. Haaland said.
The new legislation would increase housing oversight, establish tenant protections and strengthen ethics in the Department of Defense.
