A proposed pay bump for school employees has cleared its first hurdle.

Sen. Mimi Stewart from Albuquerque introduced Senate Bill 47, raising salaries for teachers, principals and other staff.

For instance, it would increase the annual pay for new teachers from $36,000 to $40,000 by next year and $45,000 by 2022.

That bill unanimously passed the Senate Education Committee and heads to the Finance Committee next.
