Proposed bill would set guidelines for armed school guards

Politics - Government

Ahead of the start of the legislative session, a state lawmaker is proposing a bill to put in place guidelines for armed officers or guards in school.

Rep. Linda Trujillo filed House Bill 129, which would allow retired police officers and contract security employees to carry guns on public school campuses, but only if they earn a level three security guard license.

The bill says they must not have another job title or accompanying job duties.

Trujillo tells the Santa Fe New Mexican, she wants it to be clear that the person hired is not a teacher or school employee.
