New Mexico’s Public Regulation Commission has had its fair share of problems. Now a pair of lawmakers believe they have a solution to fix it.
Instead of being elected, Senators Peter Wirth and William Payne are proposing to amend the constitution so that the governor appoints PRC members.
The three members would be selected from a list submitted to the governor by a nominating committee. The PRC oversees everything from utility rates to pipeline safety.
If this passes the legislature, the measure would then need approval from voters as a constitutional amendment in the next election.
