Major changes to New Mexico’s public education system are about to take effect.

House Bill 5 and Senate Bill 1, both passed Wednesday night. They provide teachers with a pay raise and give more funding to programs for at-risk students.

They also allow schools to opt-in for K-5 Plus programs that will extend instruction time for elementary students.

The more than $300 million push for public education is now waiting for the governor’s signature.
