After a bill funding early childhood education stalled in the state legislature, its supporters are trying again, this time asking for less money.
A Senate committee voted to set aside a resolution that would have diverted 1 percent from the so-called “rainy day fund.”
Opponents worried the plan would take too much money, putting the state’s future in jeopardy. So, Democratic Senators Linda Lopez and Bill Soules introduced a new bill that would drop the amount from 1 percent to a half-percent.
If lawmakers go for it, voters would still get to decide whether it becomes law.
