A bill to keep someone who may be suicidal or violent from having a gun is now in the hand of the full Senate. This comes after the passed the House and also has the governor’s support.
House Bill 83, sponsored by Daymon Ely and Joy Garratt, would allow a district court to issue an emergency order forcing a person who poses an immediate danger to surrender their firearms to law enforcement.
A court would have to decide if the order should be extended for a year. In a statement, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said, “This important common sense gun violence prevention measure would undoubtedly save lives.”
