Bill to repeal abortion ban advances past House committee

Politics - Government

A controversial abortion proposal is gaining traction at the Roundhouse.

A 1969 New Mexico statute made it a felony for an abortion provider to terminate a pregnancy with exceptions for rape, birth defects, and serious threats to a woman’s health.

However, the U.S. Supreme Court made the procedure legal nationwide in 1973.

Now, Democrats have introduced a bill that would remove the state’s abortion ban.

Saturday, the proposal passed a House committee, moving it one step closer to the House floor.
