The bill that allows medical marijuana to be given to students at public schools passed the Senate on Monday.
Sen. Candace Gould, a Republican from Albuquerque, is sponsoring the bill. It would establish a designated school official or parent to administer the medication for students battling childhood illness.
Opponents say although states have passed their own laws, using marijuana is still a federal crime. Sen. Gould says so far, the federal government has not restricted any school over medical cannabis policies.
The bill now heads to the House.
