Bill moves forward to rename Columbus Day

Politics - Government

Lawmakers are on track to rename a national holiday. Tuesday, a legislative proposal to rename Columbus Day to “Indigenous People’s Day” was heard at the Roundhouse.

Democratic State Rep. Derrick Lente, who introduced the bill, says it is only fitting since there are 23 Native American communities in New Mexico.

“I think it’s a recognition of their place in society. It’s a recognition of not just tribes, pueblos and nations, but indigenous people across the country,” Rep. Derrick Lente, D-Rio Arriba, said.

The bill was passed unanimously Tuesday afternoon.  It now goes to the state government, elections and Indian Affairs committee.
