Police video captures suspect backing into parked cars while trying to get away

Police video shows the moments officers tried to stop a fleeing driver behind the wheel of a stolen car as it crashed into several other parked cars.

The incident happened in the early morning hours of April 23 on a small residential road, Court Street in Belen.

It started with an officer approaching a stolen car, but quickly escalated into that officer trying to get out of the way of a driver who didn’t want to get arrested.

Body camera video shows the officer draw and point his weapon at the driver of a blue Hyundai Sonata that was reported as stolen.

As the driver tried to flee, video shows the car back into several other parked cars, including a police unit.

Responding officers were not able to catch the stolen car, which took off into the night. However, the driver left some else behind.

According to a criminal complaint, the responding Belen Police officer spotted a man running from the stolen car into a nearby apartment. Officers found 25-year old Eric Orona hiding inside the closet of an apartment.

Police never found the driver, however, Orona is now facing six charges including conspiracy, harboring or aiding a felon, escaping from custody, resisting, concealing identity, and criminal damage to property.

Police accused Orona of damaging a pair of handcuffs and damaging the interior of the door of the police car he was sitting in.
